Opinions on FortiFlora nutritional supplement by Purina?
When I adopted a new kitten recently, I took him to the vet because he had a host of issues (parasites, diarrhea). The vet gave me FortiFlora made by Purina to help with the kitten’s bowel movements. After a few days, it did clear up, and the vet advised me that cats "do better" when on this supplement.
My concern is, this vet seems to know just as much about feline nutrition as any other… he predictably recommended Science Diet strongly, and I know that Purina doesn’t make food that’s actually nutritious, either. So my concern is, is their supplement any good? I was thinking of just giving him the rest of the box (they are packs of powder that you just pour over food once a day) because at for a box of 30, they are kind of pricey.

Any time a cat or kitten has issues with their stomach (like a round of antibiotics) or parasites, the beneficial bacteria in the intestinal tract is destroyed. The FortiFlora is a way to get that all back in balance. There is nothing magical about it – you can do the same thing with acidopholus from the health food store, or with a spoonful or so of a yogurt with live cultures in it. There is really no reason to continue it long past normal stool output, actually, as things are now back in balance. As a supplement, yes it’s fine and actually quite good, but is of questionable value once he’s over it. And if you want to continue with something, acidopholus and yogurt are much cheaper!
I would just save money and get a human probiotic supplement. Give her like 1/3 of the dos humans would need. and avoid yogurt, the probiotics in yogurt can’t even survive a humans stomach let alone a cat.
