Should you continue to take Iron supplements if it turns your stool black?

My friend told me she began to take Iron pills in the mornings before work and has noticed that her stool has turned black in color. Is this a cause for concern? Should she stop taking the pills, she is feeling better and more energized because of them, but the only thing that worries her is her stool’s color. Is the stool color a problem??

A couple years ago, i was put on iron pills, and i had REALLY REALLY low iron. I had to take 3000 mgs of Iron twice a day. Anyway, my doctor told me, that it would make the stool a dark green or black. (Most of the time, iron pills are a very very dark green, almost black color.) Because of the color of the dye in the pills, it will make your stool that color. SHe might have some constipation too. Both of those are normal things when taking iron pills. Its nothing to worry about, and should go away slowly after she is finished taking the pills, and they get out of her system compleetly.

I do know that usually seeing black in stools can be blood, my friend would drink alot and had an ulcer, and when he saw black in his stools the next day he had to call the doctor because he said it was blood…may not be though
